With Surface looming, Microsoft fails to explain Windows 8 vs. Windows RT to consumers

thisistheverge:

If Microsoft Store reps don’t know the difference, how will Surface buyers?

Yep, this can get messy. I tried to explain what the Surface is and isn’t yesterday:

Curious friend: “So, it runs Windows?”

Me: “Well, not really, it runs Windows RT, which is not exactly what you refer to as Windows, it…” (here my friend zoned out).

Friend: “Yeh, whatever. So Windows you say…”

However, if the available apps are great and most everyday tasks just works, many people won’t mind. But many will. And the quotations from the Verge’s article are scary. I think it come’s down to expectations. The clear break from a classic desktop OS, both visually, marketing wise and by functionality is one of the key ingredients to the iPad’s success. The clear distinction has set people’s expectations on the right level and users don’t expect the iPad to do what they’d been doing with their PCs, and instead they can enjoy the iPad for what it is and what it excels at.

I think the Surface is an intriguing device and I hope it delivers on its promise. Also, Microsoft has released a new instructional video of the tablet which you can check out here.

In our upcoming October design issue, one of the many fascinating feature stories we’ve lined up is a lengthy profile of Pinterest and its elusive CEO, Ben Silbermann. That story goes live later this week, but until then, here’s a teaser, in the form of an infographic about Pinterest, created by Fast Company’s staff and designed by our own Ted Keller.

In this profusion of figures, you find out a few key things about the image-sharing service. For one, it’s dominated by women. Second, something about its layout and culture stokes an enormous buying impulse. And third, major brands are getting in on the act. It’s not a stretch to say that soon, at least on retail sites, a Pinterest button might become as ubiquitous as a Facebook Like. Check out the full infographic via the link below.
